Sanctuary. Supra-Religious Case

Vilnius

2016

In Vilnius, at the former "Meat Combine," Mantas Maziliauskas held an art action-exhibition called "Šventykla" (Sanctuary). It's an artistic action that unfolds through a structure—a building located on the impressive southern terrace of the Vilija (Neris) River, a place long valued for its warm sunsets. Through real, ever-changing experiences, a new architecture is created, akin to a sanctuary. The name of the sanctuary is most closely related to the Highland word "ŠVINTA... It's the Morning shining!... and the shining God. Architecture from ancient times, both for the Greeks and the Indians... and for many other cultures, has been one of the main keys to shaping worldviews. One of the four or the main subjects taught. Why? Perhaps because it is most closely related to the second birth of man—culture? This culture is born in true enlightenment. It's the creation of space, window, a possible way of seeing. Since childhood, I have been fascinated by sacred places and their aura. I come to them alone. Perhaps they were of various religions or ideologies, perhaps some were inside the building, and others outside... but what mattered most to me was their atmosphere, the mystery lingering in the air. And then thoughts about one's own sanctuary. Looking deeper within, each of us is probably a Sanctuary... Then, significant actions, geometric, painterly, musical, and other structures created are sketches for new cognition. Looking at such a world, one can reach self-creation, now perhaps of a forest or sanctuary painting... feeling that beauty can conquer time and transform into Space! For me, it becomes apparent as a supra-religious case, which contains the possibility of communication, listening, seeing, and creating for everyone, without emphasizing the representation of religions or ideologies, contrasts or opposites, but on the contrary, finding common denominators through creativity.
