Memory Terminal (Gate)
Klaipėda
*
Terminal (Latin terminare 'to define, to set apart') can mean:
Terminal – a territory dedicated to logistics
Terminal – a terminal for oil logistics
Terminal – a reception hall, waiting area
In the southern part of Klaipėda, in the historic area of Stariškiai, a temporary network of artistic archi-sculptural installations is established. From an existential perspective, it resembles a déjà vu—a small hint of a former or future new city, a form emerging like in dreams, constantly accompanied by lightness and ephemerality.
The City of Dreams occupies the perspectives of industrial-mechanical urban spaces.
The project aims to create a precedent—a beginning for a public space that balances nature and culture. It seeks to draw attention to the uniqueness of Klaipėda's landscape and to assert and reinforce society's unalienable right to directly experience and engage with it.
Responding to the existing parallels of the quay and a small dune, the plan introduces a rhombus geometry, which evolves into spatial and volumetric solutions. The symbolism of the rhombus in Baltic culture is often found in gateways, emphasizing the significance of a marked place of passage or event, both horizontally and vertically.
The project also reflects visual elements of buildings and structures characteristic of Klaipėda, such as diagonal and vertical features seen in both contemporary and historic timber-framed architecture. However, the artistic concept for the "Memory Terminal" (AtMinties laukiamas / MEMory terminal) employs cables and fine LED strip systems, offering a completely different architectural experience—visually transparent, lightweight, and kinetic. During the day, when nature is at its most beautiful, the structure is almost invisible; at night, it comes alive with light.
This approach invites a new way of experiencing materiality—perhaps even a glimpse into the future!
Beyond recreation, the space can also serve as an educational environment, functioning as an open-air classroom for lessons in history, music, or art.
