International competition for the creation of a monument commemorating the victims of European totalitarianisms. III place

Brussels

2018

2017 saw the announcement of an international competition for the creation of a monument commemorating the victims of European totalitarianisms in Brussels. The monument was planned for Jean Ray Square, situated between the European Parliament and the European Commission, near the historic Leopold Park. In the first selection stage, applicants were asked to submit the essence of their artistic philosophy. Following this, 67 authors and collectives from around the world registered, ultimately submitting 39 conceptual proposals. The jury members included: EU Commissioner Tibor Navracsics, Deputy Mayor of Brussels Geoffroy Coomans de Brachène, renowned British architect Sir Norman Foster, and Julie Beckman and Keith Kaseman, the architects of the Pentagon Memorial in Virginia, USA. On March 28, 2018, the winners were announced: 1st place - the "An Echo in Time" project by Chinese-British artist Tszwai So (UK); 2nd place - the "Memory Constellation" project by Sabina Tanovic & Dario Kristic (Netherlands); 3rd place - the "White Page – Soul House" project by Mantas Maziliauskas in collaboration with Povilas Šoris and Gitana Stankiene (Lithuania). White Page - Soul House Monument to the victims of totalitarianism Brussels 2018 The idea behind the project was to create monumental lightness and transparency—a sanctuary—a temple of light. Unlike most traditional monuments, which evoke a sense of heaviness through their materials, this project utilizes the metaphor of paper and space. It represents letters of light, creating a new perception of the present. Thanks to the existing square's dark recesses and the new white scroll—the light tower—contextually and semantically, a new relationship of commemoration is established. The rising and falling well of light, reflected in the mirrored infinity of the water, becomes a letter of freedom emerging through the recesses—a message. Form - a white scroll (24x4m), resembling a twisted sheet of paper, created with perforated relief, inscribed with extracts from letters of victims in various world languages, transformed into a sculptural image of text visually dissolving in light that seeps through the walls. During the day, light penetrates the sculpture, while in darkness, using illumination, it emanates from it. A clean white page is envisaged in the center of the square. Construction - the base for the sculpture and the basin is a steel square, painted dark blue (Ral5004 Black blue). The sculpture is made of 15 mm rolled steel parts. Due to the perforations, it loses ~40% of its weight and becomes a lightweight, wind-permeable, resonating structure. The entire structure is painted white (Ral 9010). The bridge and railings are made of transparent triplex glass.
